Fabrikada çalışan işçiler at arabalarıyla gelen eşyaları, oradan oraya koşturan insanları pencerelere birikip gülerek seyrederler.

Tekin, gecekondu sakinlerinin dramını kendine has büyülü diliyle anlatır.

131 The Story of Creation in The Bible and The Quran: A Comparative Study

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Aydın GÖRMEZ19 Assist. Prof. Dr. Zeki EDİS20

Abstract

Many of the narratives told in the Quran are the same ones you can find in the Bible, such as the creation of the world, Adam, Cain and Abel - the sons of Adam, Noah, the tower of Babel, Abraham, Joseph, Moses, Saul, David and Solomon, and some other prophets. Often their stories are similar in general but more often than not, their stories might be given in a quite different way. While there are more stories in the Bible, Quran gives details not touched upon in the Bible. Having read these narratives from both holy books, one can find minor, unimportant differences that are tolerable. But as for those opposite or totally different ones, the reader is naturally perplexed what to believe. In this point the faith of the reader is at work. The Christian readers tend to take those in the Bible as the original ones whereas Muslim readers believe that the revelations that came to the Jews and the Christians are original God’s words but over time they have been distorted. Even if this being the case, these stories find curious readers of different ages from both religions as well as from other belief systems. This paper seeks to compare and contrast the issue of genesis in both holy books.

Key Words: the Bible, the Quran, prophets, narratives, genesis, compare and contrast.

Introduction

Stories from the creation to the lives of the prophets and saints told in the Bible and Quran have similarities as well as differences. The story of Adam and Eve, Cain and Abel, Adam’s sons, Noah, the tower of Babel, Abraham, Joseph, Moses, Saul, David and Solomon, and some others are among them. Such stories remind one that they all come from the same source and they are similar in general but more often than not, their stories might be given in a quite different way. They also seem to complete one another. While there are more stories in the Bible, Quran gives details not touched upon in the Bible. Having read these narratives

132 from both holy books, one can find minor, unimportant differences that are tolerable. But as for those different ones might confuse readers naturally. In this point readers tend to believe the creed of the religion they adopt. Christian readers tend to take those in the Bible as the original ones whereas Muslim readers believe that the revelations that came to the Jews and the Christians are original God’s words but over time they have been distorted. Even if this being the case, these stories find curious readers of different ages from both religions as well as from other belief systems. This being the case, these holy books appear to be rich and engaging sources of curious stories for literati.

The Story of Creation in the Bible and the Quran: A Comparative Study

Genesis is the first and the main chapter in which the creation is mentioned. Hebrews, Jeremiah, Psalm, Isaiah, Ephesians, Romans, Amos, Revelation, Ecclesiastes are among others that are about creation. “In the beginning when God created the heavens and the earth, the earth was a formless void and darkness covered the face of the deep, while a wind from God swept over the face of the waters” (Genesis, 1.1 New Revised Standard Version) is the statement that the Bible begins with. The rest of the chapter Genesis tells how the earth was formed from an ugly, formless, empty, and dark object to a wonderful one with the involvement of God’s spirit. The details beginning from the first day follow suit. With the very first day light is created and separated from dark, light being given the name “day” while dark is given the name “night.” The second day a space is formed to separate waters, which is called “sky.” Land is created in the third day with the creation of a dry ground and waters are gathered on one side. The dry ground is named “land,” while waters “seas.” Plants and trees are also created on the same day. God is believed to have formed the sun, moon, and the stars on the fourth day. Stars are given the function to give light to the earth and separate the day from the night. By this process seasons, days, and years are specified. On the fifth day, birds and sea creatures are created and while the former propagated in the sky, the latter crowded the sky. On day six, God formed man and animals and scattered them on Earth. Man is given the privilege to rule and dominate the rest of the creatures, to take the responsibility and cultivate the soil. Having finished all the creation and forming stuff, now tired, the God assigns the seventh day holy for refreshing and resting (Fairchild, 2019).

In the Bible it is emphasized that God gives priority to man as his favourite creature: “So God created mankind in his own image, in the image of God he created them; male and female he

133 created them” (Genesis 1: 27). “He has made everything beautiful in its time. He has also set eternity in the human heart; yet no one can fathom what God has done from beginning to end”

(Ecclesiastes 3: 11).

In the Quran surahs Al-Araf, Al-Mu’minun, Ghafir, Al-Nahl, Ya-sin, Al-insan, Al-Kahf, An-Najm, Al-Anbya, Al-Mursalat, At-Tariq, As-Sajdah the creation issue is related either as a repetition or in details:

Verily We created man from a product of wet earth; then placed him as a drop (of seed) in a safe lodging; then We fashioned the drop into a clot, then We fashioned the clot into a little lump, then We fashioned the little lump into bones, then clothed the bones with flesh, and then produced it another creation. So blessed be Allah, the Best of Creators!” [Al-Mu’minun, 12:14]

The fact that man was created from clay and sperm is repeated in various verses. And in some verses it is emphasized that human beings were created from a simple clay so they should not exceed the limits and behave themselves. The Quran mentions the creation of man from a lowly or despicable human secretion, that is, semen. “Whilst the first human being was created and fashioned from dust, his progeny continued on earth via this water” (Farooqi, 2012). Another point which is slightly different with the Bible is that the Quran states that God created man as his envoy or representative, and bestowed some gifts to Adam, and taught him the names, properties and qualities of all the existents, animate or inanimate objects (Al-Baqarah, 31).

In the Quran some verses evoke those events in the Bing Bang theory:” Have those who disbelieved not considered that the heavens and the earth were a joined entity, and We separated them and made from water every living thing?” (Al-Anbiya, 30). Following this big explosion, Allah orders the sky which was in smoke and the earth to form a coherence coming together (Fussilat, 11). Thus the elements and what was to become the planets and stars began to cool, come together, and form into shape, following the natural laws that arranged the universe. Despite some disagreements between theologians in terms of the measurements of what a day means in reality, in line with the Bible the universe is said to have been created in six days:

Indeed, your Lord is Allah, who created the heavens and earth in six days and then established Himself above the Throne. He covers the night with

134 the day, [another night] chasing it rapidly; and [He created] the sun, the moon, and the stars, subjected by His command. Unquestionably, His is the creation and the command; blessed is Allah, Lord of the worlds (Al-Araf, 54).

In the Quran, God is said to have ordered the angels including the Satan to prostrate Adam, however Satan refused, (Al-Baqarah, 34) which is not mentioned in the Bible. For the Quran Satan was a member belonging to the Jinns which is also not mentioned in the Bible. In the Bible God warn Adam and Eve they will die if they eat from the forbidden tree. But they don’t die and it is said in the Bible that they transgressed by committing a sin. The Quran says that God warned Adam and Eve not to eat from the tree, otherwise they become transgressors.

In the Bible the forbidden tree is the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil, and the fruit is probably an apple. This tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil is not the case in the Quran.

In the Bible the tempter is Satan in the form of a serpent, which is not mentioned in the Quran. In the Bible as soon as they ate the fruit of the forbidden tree their private parts became uncovered and they began to cover themselves with fig leaves. In the Bible it was the woman who was deceived and became a sinner first and the man followed her while both of them were deceived for the Quran. In the Bible upon the question why Adam ate the fruit, he blamed Eve and she blamed the Serpent, which is not so for the Quran. Adam, Eve and the serpent are cursed by God for the Bible. This is because of this curse that Man is obliged to work hard to eat, and have to die, and woman gives birth in pain and is ruled by man.

However, these details are not given in the Quran.

Conclusion

Abrahamic religions including Judaism, Christianity, and Islam accept a similar path according to which Adam is the first man created by God, and he was placed in Heaven. He was made up of clay and water. Soon afterwards, Eve was created from Adam’s rib as companion to him. They formed a perfect couple living in Paradise happily until the Satan showed up. The Satan had a sinister agenda to divert them from God’s true path. He tempted Eve as he knew it was easier to tempt a woman since her weak nature. Finally he succeeded to deceive Eve, and Adam followed suit. In the Bible it is pointed as a punishment they were banished from the paradise and sent to a new created but a worse place, the earth, while for Quran, “Prophet Adam was made to be sent to earth not to live in heaven forever” (Sadia et

135 al., 2012: 961). All humanity descended from Adam and Eve. Unfortunately, with the first sin committed by Eve and Adam, calamities began to follow one another and their sons began to kill each other with the first exemplary case of Cain and Abel. In both Bible and Quran it is stated that the universe was created in six days.

Despite the differences between the Bible and Quran, one can notice enormous similarities.

Furthermore, rather than focusing on the differences, the same messages are emphasized in both holy books. Man is warned to be vigilant against his greatest enemy, the Satan who has various methods and is skilful in deceiving man. In nature man is weak and apt to make mistakes, so he must be careful and needs God’s mercy. Man should seek repentance from God. The dangers of pride are exemplified with the case of Satan who was among the Angels but he was thrown to Hell due to his pride.

136 Fantastic Literature as The First and The Last Type of Narrative

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Aydın GÖRMEZ21 Assist. Prof. Dr. Zeki EDİS22

Abstract

Fantastic literature, also known as fantasy literature, dates back to ancient times. It is not that easy to identify its inception or claim that it has ended. It has survived from the early periods when there was no written literature to the present day. Anthropological findings reveal that almost all the fairy tales that form the basis of literary culture of pre-literacy are categorised under the fantasy genre and they are similar to each other although they were written in different geographies. These mysterious tales, which are seen as primitive and childish today, and although they have undergone some changes over time, they have been transferred from generation to generation uninterruptedly. Throughout history, new stories have been added and such stories have survived to the present day. Tales beginning with “once upon a time…”, legends, mythological stories, animal tales known as fables, fairy tales are the most well-known examples of fantastic literature. This paper argues that not only the above mentioned ancient types but also such most recent types of narratives as scientific fantasy or science-fiction should be regarded as the derivatives of fantastic literature.

Key Words: fantastic literature, fairy tales, scientific fantasy, science-fiction Fantastic Literature as the First and the Last Type of Narrative

The ability of fantastic literature to survive for so long is proof of how powerful it is.

Although it has such a long history, this ancient genre was only recently classified by literati.

Before 1969, fantastic, as a genre of literature, had a limited use only in children's literature.

When the categories emerged scientifically, how wide the extent of fantastic fiction was realised. “Over the centuries it has reached in all possible directions, backward into the mythical past, forward into science fiction, and sideways into all sorts of parallel worlds.”
